Lenny Edwards, a much-loved bin crew member with the Greater Cambridge Shared Waste Service, is lighting up the streets again with his dazzling festive uniform.
Known locally as the ‘Walking Christmas Tree’ Lenny has transformed his standard orange workwear for the past 12 years into a spectacular display of seasonal joy.
For 2025, Lenny is brighter than ever, adding more than 700 LED lights to his outfit and more than 500 jingle bells. His jacket also features hand-knitted bears, lovingly crafted by his wife, Pru, making his uniform a true labour of love.
Lenny said: “I’ve been doing this for years and it’s all about spreading joy in our community. Seeing the smiles, waves, and hearing the laughter from residents makes every effort worthwhile. If I can brighten someone’s day - even for a moment - it means the world to me. It’s my way of giving something back and keeping the festive spirit alive for everyone.”
Lenny added that recent favourite moments include brightening the day of a young autistic girl who was excited to take photos and a woman whose mum had recently died - who said that seeing his outfit and hearing the jingling bells brought a much-needed smile during a very difficult time.
Lenny’s festive flair doesn’t stop at his outfit while collecting the bins - he also pedals his way to work on a dazzling, decked-out Christmas bicycle.
Cllr Natalie Warren Green, Lead Cabinet Member for Environment for South Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “Lenny is quite literally a shining example of community spirit. His creativity and enthusiasm bring joy to thousands of residents every year. We’re proud to have him on the team.”
Cllr Rosy Moore, Cabinet Member for Climate Action and Environment at Cambridge City Council, said: “Many thanks to Lenny our very own Christmas bin man who is brightening up our cold winter days, whilst also working tirelessly with his colleagues, through wind, rain and all weathers to keep our bins emptied and make sure our recycling gets recycled. Thanks Lenny and team we appreciate everything you do!”
The team at Greater Cambridge Shared Waste - a service shared by South Cambridgeshire District Council and Cambridge City Council - ensures Lenny’s festive attire is fully risk-assessed before he takes to the streets, prioritising safety for both staff and residents.
