Creating a greener district for South Cambridgeshire residents is on the agenda at a climate conference celebrating net zero action locally.

The District Council is holding its third Local Climate Action Conference, open to everyone, on Friday 17 October from noon to 5pm at Storey’s Field Centre in Eddington Road.
Refreshments and a plant-based lunch will be provided, and cycle parking is onsite with buses nearby. Car parking is at Madingley Road Park & Ride. RSVP here.
Cllr Natalie Warren Green, Lead Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “We’re proud to continue leading the way in tackling the climate and ecological emergencies, working towards a district that is not only environmentally friendly but resilient and future ready. The 2025 Climate Action Conference is a rallying call that reminds us that real change begins in our communities, when we come together with purpose and passion. By sharing bold ideas, practical solutions, and collective energy, we’re showing what’s possible when we unite. Every action we take, no matter the size, moves us closer to a cleaner, greener, and fairer world for generations to come.”
Speakers at the event include Ian Walters talking about a biodiversity action plan for Duxford Parish and Josh Newman from Grantchester’s HeatLink about the transition to renewable heating.
The Council’s charity of the year, the Wildlife Trust Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire, will talk about groundbreaking butterfly research with the University of Cambridge that’s changing the way they manage their nature reserves.
Exhibitors include the RSPB, Cambridge Conservation Volunteers, Cambridgeshire Regenerative Trust and The Liberation Cycle.
In addition, a workshop will give attendees a chance to share thoughts on the seven themes of the Council’s upcoming Climate and Nature Strategy for 2025–2030 - which sets out an ambitious roadmap to halve emissions by 2030 and enhance biodiversity across the district. The public can comment on proposals in a public consultation that launches on October 1.
The 2025 event continues the success of the last two conferences attended by residents, councillors and climate action groups, who shared their ideas and vision for the future of a net zero district.
- One of the District Council’s core visions is to help the district become net zero by 2050. As part of this, it set up a Zero Carbon Communities grant scheme in 2019 and has given more than £750,000 to 96 projects locally, aimed at reducing carbon emissions and engaging communities on climate change such as tree planting, energy efficient heating and lighting and tackling food waste.
