More than 600 Council homes in South Cambridgeshire are set to benefit from major energy efficiency upgrades – cutting tenants’ energy bills. The project is part of a wider investment programme of around £19 million being delivered by South Cambridgeshire District Council in partnership with Mears.

The project is part of a wider investment programme of around £19 million being delivered by South Cambridgeshire District Council in partnership with Mears.
Almost half of the funding is from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero under the Government’s national Warm Homes Plan. A total of £8,280,376 is being provided for South Cambridgeshire under the latest wave of the Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund scheme. South Cambridgeshire District Council will contribute £10 million from its Housing Revenue Account – consisting of Council house rents – to the improvements too.
A total of 610 properties will be upgraded with more than 2,300 individual energy efficiency measures. These include:
- Cavity Wall Insulation: 576 homes
- Loft Insulation: 397 homes
- Air Source Heat Pumps: 356 homes
- Solar PV Panels: 388 homes
- Ventilation Improvements: 596 homes
- External Wall Insulation: 14 homes
The upgrades aim to bring every home involved in the programme up to at least an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) rating of C helping tenants reduce their energy usage and lower their bills by over £200 a year.
Councillor John Batchelor, Lead Cabinet Member for Housing at South Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “This is a fantastic example of how we're working to improve the quality of life for our residents while also tackling the climate emergency. By making our Council homes warmer and more energy efficient, we’re reducing energy bills for families and cutting carbon emissions at the same time. I’m proud that South Cambridgeshire is leading the way in delivering real, positive change for our communities.”
Tenants whose homes are included in the programme will be contacted directly, once priority and location-based assessments and verification surveys have been completed. This phased approach will ensure the best value for money and the most efficient delivery of the improvements.
The Council’s Housing Team, alongside delivery partners Mears, secured the £8 million in Government funding to support this ambitious programme.
