A £100,000 grant has launched to fund improvement projects of allotments across South Cambridgeshire. The Allotment Improvement Grant provides funding to support projects that enhance the productivity, sustainability, and social value of allotment spaces.

Improvement projects the grant aims to deliver are:
- Improving water access – connecting the allotment to an existing mains water supply, or rainwater harvesting
- Implementing pest control measures – installing fencing to protect from rabbits and deer
- Upgrading facilities – such as waterless toilets to benefit all but particularly elderly and children, or accessibility improvements.
Alternative projects will also be considered if they have positive social benefits such as promoting mental well-being, encouraging outdoor activity, and community engagement.
The grant is open to applications from allotment owners such as Town or Parish Councils, and allotment associations in South Cambridgeshire. Up to £10,000 can be applied for and it is encouraged that applicants consider environmentally friendly options when purchasing items for their projects.
Cllr Henry Batchelor, Lead Cabinet Member for Communities, said: "Allotments have so many benefits - they promote sustainable food production and contribute towards biodiversity, they enhance people’s physical and mental well-being, as well as strengthening community cohesion through shared green spaces. This grant will help fund projects so that allotments in South Cambridgeshire remain thriving and inclusive spaces for many.”
