Garages to rent in South Cambridgeshire

We have a number of garages throughout South Cambridgeshire, which can be rented by anyone in the district, both South Cambridgeshire tenants and non-South Cambridgeshire tenants.

Just let us know your preferred village location when you apply to rent a garage and we'll see what we have available.

Unfortunately we don't have garages in every village in our district and our South Cambridgeshire garages are very popular, so we may not have availability in your preferred location. However, even if the site you prefer is not available at the moment, you can still apply and be placed on the waiting list for that garage site.

Please note at present there are waiting lists for most areas.

When a South Cambridgeshire garage becomes available, we will contact you.

Apply to rent a South Cambridgeshire owned garage

We will not accept a garage application from anyone:

  • that has rent arrears for a South Cambridgeshire home or garage
  • owing money from a former tenancy with us
  • who has previously had a South Cambridgeshire garage repossessed
  • that gives false information when applying for a garage

You can still apply for a garage, even if you already have one and need another garage.

Our garages are not rented out for storage purposes. You will need to confirm that you own a vehicle, and provide details of the type of vehicle and registration number.

All applicants will be asked to provide 4 weeks rent in advance.

Complete an application form and indicate your preferred choice of garage village location.

If you are unable to complete the form you can call us on 01954 713 000 from Monday to Friday, between 8am to 5:30pm for assistance.

You will be asked whether you are one of our tenants and for further details, including your:

  • name
  • date of birth
  • address
  • telephone number
  • email address

Garages are not rented out for storage purposes, so you will also need to confirm that you own a vehicle, and give the type and registration number.

We will send a letter to you within 10 days of receipt of the application form.

The letter will tell you if there is a vacant garage in your chosen area and offer this to you, or if a garage is not available at the moment you will be informed that you have been placed on a waiting list.

If we offer you a garage, you will need to contact us and arrange to sign a garage tenancy agreement.

We will also tell you if you need to supply a padlock to lock the garage, or if you need to collect a key from us.

If you have been told that you have been placed on the waiting list, the Housing Services team will notify you once a garage becomes available.

Unfortunately, we cannot predict when a garage will become available to rent.

Once you are at the top of the waiting list and a garage becomes available we will contact you.

If you apply to rent a South Cambs garage and there are no vacant garages at that time, you will be placed on the waiting list.

You can contact us by calling 01954 713000 to find out where on the list you are at any time.

If your garage needs a repair, or you have any issues accessing your garage, contact our repairs team on 0800 085 1313 in an emergency or you can report a repair online.

If you want to report any grounds maintenance issues in the surrounding area of your garage then you can report it online.

Garages must not be used for any purpose other than ordinary domestic use.

Paraffin, petrol, Calor Gas or any other dangerous or explosive materials must not be stored in garages, other than in small quantities for domestic use and only if contained in suitable containers.

There are a number of different ways to pay:

  • Monthly Direct Debit
  • By GIRO card at Post Office
  • Via telephone by calling 03450455218

Please note: VAT must be charged to garage users who are not South Cambs tenants. When you sign for your garage tenancy these options will be discussed with you.

You must notify us by contacting the housing services team. You can do this by sending an email to duty.housing@scambs.gov.uk or writing to the following address:

Please include in your letter/email:

We will write back to you within 10 days of receipt of your letter.

We will give you 4 weeks written notice, to terminate on the Sunday.

You must give 4 clear weeks written notice. You can do this by sending an email to duty.housing@scambs.gov.uk or writing to the following address:

Housing Services Department
South Cambridgeshire Hall
Cambourne Business Park
Cambourne, Cambridge CB23 6EA

(to the address/email above).

You need to include in your letter to us:

  • Your name
  • address
  • the garage address

If your garage has keys, we will not terminate the tenancy until these have been received by us in the office.

We take no responsibility for any keys that are lost in the post and you may incur further costs.

We will write back to you within 10 days of receipt of your letter to confirm the termination date for the garage tenancy.

When your garage tenancy is being terminated, you must make sure that:

  • your garage has been cleared and left clean and tidy. If the garage needs to be cleared you will incur further costs
  • any rent due on the garage is paid up until the date of termination.
  • any garage keys are returned to us, either on the day of termination or before. Failure to do this will result in rent being charged to you until the keys are received.

Please note: If you decide to post the garage key(s) we recommend that you send them recorded delivery; we will not take responsibility for any keys lost in the post and you may incur further costs.

It is advisable to cancel the Direct Debit with your Bank/Building Society.

You must write to us as soon as possible informing us of your decision.
