Making your own compost

Composting is nature's way of recycling and helps to reduce the amount of waste we put out for the collection.

By composting kitchen and garden waste at home you can easily improve the quality of your soil and be well on your way to a more beautiful garden.

Following our home composting guide will provide you with all the information needed to get the best out of your bin.

What you can compost at home

You need a 50/50 mix of 'green' (nitrogen rich) and 'brown' (carbon rich) materials, for example:

Greens:

  • fruit and vegetable peelings
  • tea leaves and coffee grounds
  • old flowers
  • grass cuttings

Browns:

  • cardboard egg boxes
  • small amounts of scrunched up newspaper
  • bedding from vegetarian pets (for example, straw, hay or newspaper from a rabbit hutch)
  • shredded paper
  • garden prunings

What you shouldn't compost at home

  • meat
  • fish
  • dairy
  • cooked food
  • cat and dog waste
  • coal ash (wood ash can be added to compost)
