About Cambridge East 

In 2008 we adopted the Cambridge East Area Action Plan. This plan identifies the site for a sustainable new urban quarter of approximately 10,000 to 12,000 dwellings, the delivery of which is based on the relocation of Cambridge airport.  The area can be divided into three main development sites - Wing/ Marleigh, Land north of Cherry Hinton and Marshalls ground run enclosure.

The ground run enclosure has been fully operational since 2019. Development on the land north of Cherry Hinton is expected to have started by 2023. Outline permission was granted for Marleigh in November 2016 and since then discharge of conditions applications have been submitted for phases 1a and 1b. 

How can I view the planning application?

The easiest way for you to view the plans is to visit and search for the planning applications using the application reference number:

  • 18/0481/OUT – Outline planning application for 1200 new homes at land north of Cherry Hinton 
  • S/1096/19/RM - Reserved matters application for 239 homes Marleigh phase 1A

If you do not have internet access, you can also view the plans at our office between 9am and 5pm weekdays.

Timeline 

November 2016 - Outline permission granted for up to 1300 homes, a primary school, food store, community facilities, landscaping and associated infrastructure (Land north of Newmarket Road known as Marleigh)

September 2018 - Site wide design code approved for Marleigh

October 2018 - Adoption of Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire Local Plans

December 2018 - Phase 1 infrastructure approved for Marleigh

November 2018 - Land North of Cherry Hinton SPD  adopted by South Cambridgeshire in November 2018 and by the City Council in December 2018.

January 2019 - Work started on site at Marleigh

September 2019 - Marleigh phase 1A Reserved Matters approved for 239 dwellings and a local centre  

May 2019 - Meeting of Joint Development Control Committee where there was resolution to grant planning permission subject to section 106 agreement and planning conditions at Land North of Cherry Hinton 

March 2020 - Sales Cantre opened at Marleigh 

June 2020 - Planning application submitted for phase 1B of Marleigh including 308 dwellings, sports facilities and allotments

Present - 'Prior to occupation' planning conditions currently being determined for phase 1A of Marleigh by Local Planning Authority
