Taxi licences

South Cambridgeshire District Council's licensing service issues licenses to allow the operation of a private hire service within the district. By licensing, and regularly checking, the drivers, operators and vehicles, the council is able to ensure that the public are offered as safe a service as possible.

Private Hire driver

What is the licence for?

Private hire vehicles can only undertake pre-booked work. Almost all vehicles in the South Cambridgeshire district are private hire, as the district does not contain taxi ranks. The licence allows the licensee to undertake pre-booked work through an SCDC licensed operator.

How long does the licence last?

The licence is normally valid for 3 years

What is the charge for the licence?

i) Grant - £215.00

ii) Renewal - £115.00

iii) Fee for knowledge base test for drivers (new applicants only, this is currently only for Hackney drivers)  - £50.00

iv) Replacement badge - £10.00

*Criminal Records Check - £54.85

*DVLA Mandate - £7.00

*These charges are to be added to your application for Grant and Renewal. The Criminal Records Check fee is subject to change as the Council does not determine this fee.

Hackney Carriage driver

What is the licence for?

Hackney Carriage taxis can ply for hire within the South Cambridgeshire district and undertake pre-booked work from anywhere. The licence allows the licensee to drive a Hackney Carriage taxi only.

How long does the licence last?

The licence is normally valid for 3 years

Operator licence

What is the licence for?

If you wish to run a company offering taxi services you will need a licence to do so.

How long does the licence last?

The licence is normally issued for 5 years.

What is the charge for the licence?

1-year charges:

i) Single vehicle - £95.00

ii) Two vehicles - £165.00

iii) Three to five vehicles - £220.00

iv) Six to ten vehicles - £290.00

v) Eleven to twenty vehicles - £350.00

vi) Twenty-one vehicles and above - £480.00

vii) Name/address change to existing licence - £10.00

5-year charges:

i) Single vehicle - £400.00

ii) Two vehicles - £750.00

iii) Three to five vehicles - £970.00

iv) Six to ten vehicles - £1220.00

v) Eleven to twenty vehicles - £1450.00

vi) Twenty-one vehicles and above - £2100.00

Vehicle licence

What is the licence for?

A vehicle used as a taxi/private hire vehicle has to be road worthy and meet standards of safety and access. Vehicles over 12 months old are required to have an MOT and Certificate of Compliance (CoC) that MUST be no more than one month old when presented for licensing. For further information please refer to Appendix B of the Private Hire and Taxi Handbook.

How long does the licence last?

The vehicle must be tested every year and is subject to a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) prior to being licensed. A list of approved garages is found on p.15 of the Private Hire and Taxi Handbook.

What is the charge for the licence?

i) Grant - £125.00

ii) Renewal - £95.00

iii) Replacement Plate - £20.00

iv) Certificate of Compliance - £30.00 (in addition to MOT test fee as set by VOSA)
