We discussed restoration by reducing the height of all the Hawthorn and Elm to around 1.5m (this will allow the new growth to form a hedge to top approximately 30cm above the stumps. The Elm will probably die-back but are likely to be replaced with new suckering growth as is common for the species. May also reveal opportunities where some young bare root Hawthorn can be used to gap up the hedge. This work would start at the end of the hedge (drive entrance) and run up to the largest healthy Elm approximately 5-6m from the end of your boundary. We will also remove all the Ivy and treat the stems with a suitable licensed herbicide. We will use the chipped brash from this operation to mulch the hedge and I recommend this is watered to help it on its way. 6. Thin dead Birch - fell.
Dying Birch either side of the above - remove major dead wood (approximately half of each tree).

Concern has been raised regarding its height and sail of this tree and its proximity to both the neighbouring house (Alpha Omega), the telephone lines and of course the very busy main road junction (Tunwells Lane/High Green/High Street). In the high winds experienced earlier on this year the neighbours were in fear of branch failure. Considering the height of this previous pollard and the possibility of weak unions/pockets of rot as a result of previous works, I propose a re-pollard. The tree has been pollard at two separate points previously which is clearly visible. The aim of the proposed works is to reduce shading, sail and height by 25ft (35%) back to a framework pollard. They have become very large and are in need of some control. I recommend a hard cut on the house side, back to the line where the brown grass and Ivy meet. This is severe but it is the only way to improve the grass and thicken the growth. I am confident that new growth will be produced but there may be a few stems that decide to give up. Due to the high number of stems this should not be a problem. The old lawn beneath should be sown with shade tolerant seed. The climbers growing off the trellis panels will also have to be cut back as they are combined. We aim to leave the Cotoneaster only. The owner has been asked to reduce the growth on the road side. I agree that this is extensive in places and a gap needs to be establish between the hedge and the pollarded Lime tree. To prune to various lengths to leave a looser face. Lower branches should be lifted to expose the Beech hedge more. T4 Fagus sylvatica (Beech) Crown lift over road, removing damaged branch ends and cutting back to a suitable branch union beyond the road edge to maintain as much screening as possible. T5 Acer pseudoplatanus (Sycamore) Remove lower limb back to main stem and lift crown to clear road.
