Chance to comment on Great Abington Neighbourhood Plan
Great Abington has become the first community in South Cambridgeshire to submit a Neighbourhood Plan – which is their vision for the area – to the District Council.
Neighbourhood plans are a way for communities to play a more prominent role in helping to decide the future of the places where they live and work. Communities can use a plan to help shape the future development and use of land in their neighbourhood. This includes the development of homes, shops, offices, services and facilities.
Local people are now being asked to comment on a Neighbourhood Plan that has been proposed for the Great Abington former Land Settlement Association (LSA) estate. This includes three planning policies that allow extensions and rebuilding of properties already on the estate, and the possibility for one new home for each original plot within the former LSA estate. There were 62 plots in total within the estate.
The plan also seeks to preserve the character and distinctiveness of the area by resisting any proposals that would mean estate roads or patterns of development are significantly changed.
A public consultation into the Great Abington Former Land Settlement Association Estate Neighbourhood Plan runs from 9am today (Monday 5 March) to 5pm on Monday 16 April.
Following this consultation, comments and the Neighbourhood Plan will be considered by an independent examiner. After that, a local referendum will be held to decide whether it is formally adopted.
If it is adopted, the Neighbourhood Plan will be used when deciding whether to approve future planning applications in the affected area.
Neighbourhood Plans are also being prepared in Bassingbourn-cum-Kneesworth, Cottenham, Foxton, Gamlingay, Histon and Impington, Linton and Hildersham, Melbourn Stapleford and Great Shelford, Swavesey, Thriplow, Waterbeach, West Wickham and Whittlesford. A Neighbourhood Planning toolkit has been made available by the District Council to help communities to decide whether they want to create one, and if so, set out how to do so.
