  • Do you have good maintenance skills and knowledge?
  • Do you spot maintenance needs and take the initiative to make repairs or escalate issues?
  • Do you work well as a part of a team or with minimal/no supervision.
  • Are your health and safety conscious?

If this is you, we would love to hear from you.

This an exciting opportunity to join our Facilities Management Team. As one of our two Caretakers you will be primarily based at the South Cambs Hall in Cambourne with some travel to additional Facilities Management site as and when required.

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that South Cambs Hall and our hub sites are kept maintained to a high standard and that all building users are provided a safe and secure working environment.

To enable this, your primary role as caretaker is to take a proactive approach to maintenance by completing regular internal and external building patrols rectifying any issues that arise (for example, general housekeeping related, minor/general repairs, etc.) in a safe and timely manner, escalating any issues which requires a specialised contractor to your Line Manager.

As the post holder you will work a rotating shift pattern (early & late shift).  In addition you will be part of  a 4-weekly ‘Out of Hours On call’ rota in conjunction with a second Caretaker and two Security Officers.  The  ‘Out of Hours On call’ will include and emergency call outs as well as any planned contractors work out of building opening hours,  Bank Holidays and weekends.  You will be expected to be available to attend the South Cambs Hall site within a 1-hour response window without fail in response to an emergency situation.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a positive and supportive image of South Cambridgeshire District Council and the Facilities Management Team to all building users.

Due to the nature of the role Hybrid working is not applicable and you will be required to work primarily from South Cambs Hall Building with some travel to additional facilities managed sites as and when required.

From January 2023 until May 2023 we are taking part in a 4-day working week trial. A 4-day week is when full-time staff work one less day per week (4 days instead of 5) but still get paid the same salary. It is not the same as compressed hours, which is working the traditional 37-hour week over four long days. A 4-day week for a full-time employee at the Council will consist of 30 hours. For part time staff, the amount of hours reduced would be calculated via a pro-rata reduction. A helpful way of explaining this arrangement is that staff will need to get 100% of their work done, in 80% of the time, for 100% of their salary. The purpose of this trial is to better support the health and wellbeing of our colleagues, while still delivering an excellent service to our residents. For more information please visit our website.

This post is not included within the initial trial of the 4-day-week but will be included in the next phase of the trial if the initial trial proves successful. Shift systems will be varied at that point as necessary.

For more information about the role please contact Tanitia Burton-Evans, Facilities & Compliance Officer,
