Greater Cambridge Design and Construction Awards Ceremony 2022

The winners of the first Greater Cambridge Design and Construction Awards – which celebrate the best in placemaking, design and craft skills locally - have been revealed.

An awards ceremony was held at Frankopan Hall at Jesus College at the University of Cambridge last night (Wednesday 16 March 2022.)

The evening began with presentations from the shortlisted candidates, showcasing their submissions to the packed audience. The following awards were up for grabs at this year’s event: Best New Building over £2m, Best Conservation, Alteration or Extension of an Existing Building over £2m, Best Conservation, Alteration or Extension of an Existing Building under £2m, The David Mackay Award for Engineering and Sustainability, Craftmanship, Apprentice of the Year, Young Professional of the Year, Site Manager of the Year.

The awards are endorsed by the Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Service, a partnership between Cambridge City and South Cambridgeshire District Councils, along with the Cambridge Forum for the Construction Industry (CFCI). 

The awards are intended to be as comprehensive as possible, encouraging entries from projects of all scales. Entries were welcomed from private home extensions to large developments, individuals to institutions. The list of categories for the building awards encompasses all aspects of construction including design, sustainability, engineering, quality of work, and construction. There are also People awards, to recognise the individual contributions to the industry. Later in the year, the Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Service will be hosting its virtual awards ceremony for the Considerate Construction Scheme.

Our officers work hard in partnership with owners, architects, and local communities to ensure good design is appropriate to its local context, which is also the objective of our new Design Review Panel. I look forward to seeing what the future has to hold for us in Greater Cambridge’. 

Meredith Bowles, Chair of the CFCI, said: ‘Making buildings takes years and the commitment of many people; it’s an achievement in itself. To make a great building takes so much more: the ambition of the owner; the vision of the design team; the tenacity and skill of the contractors. The Awards showcase the very best new buildings in Greater Cambridge and celebrate the efforts of those that make them happen.’
