Through the keyhole to building your own home

27 June 2016

Anyone who has ever considered building their own home is urged to book a place on a free workshop which aims to unlock the door that turns house building dreams into reality.

The latest in a series of events organised by South Cambridgeshire District Council, the workshop will bring together leading industry experts and Council officers to help people learn more about new self build legislation and regulations, modular building construction methods and practical building tips.

The workshop will run from 6pm on Tuesday 5 July at the Council’s offices on Cambourne Business Park, and will offer lots of opportunities to ask questions of the experts. To book your place email rightto.build@scambs.gov.uk

Cllr Lynda Harford, South Cambridgeshire District Council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “This event is a great chance for people to talk to experts and discover how achievable building their own home is. We know that there is an appetite for this locally as 460 people have already registered their interest with us.

“The team on hand at the event have over 70 years of industry experience between them. We want people to be able to tap into that expertise to see how an initial idea sketched on a piece of paper could become the place they call home.”

Last year the Council made a successful bid for Government funding and became one of eleven councils in the country piloting its new focus on self build/custom build housing.

There are registers for people interested in self build opportunities and anyone interested in bringing forward land for self/custom build.

More information on self build can also be found on the National and Custom Self Build website
