Grants up for grabs to help sporting stars

10 May 2016

Sporting stars in South Cambridgeshire are being urged to bid for up to £2,000 to help develop their careers.

The call for bids follows South Cambridgeshire District Council launching its annual Elite Athlete grant scheme with a pot of £10,000 available to support local talented people.

The Elite Athlete grant scheme is available to support athletes of all ages at all stages of their sporting careers – whether competing at regional level, making steady progress at national level, or representing GB in world class events, such as the Olympics or Paralympics.

Albert Pavelin, aged 18, from Ickleton, successfully bid last year and was awarded £500.

He said: “I think the South Cambridgeshire District Council’s Elite Athlete grant is a great opportunity for up and coming sporting performers.  Don’t doubt your worthiness for receiving the grant. If you have a passion for the sport that you do then there is no reason not to seek the opportunities to succeed.”

Cllr Mick Martin, South Cambridgeshire District Council’s cabinet member responsible for sport, said: “The grant scheme is just one of the Council’s initiatives to encourage people to take part in sport and lead healthy lifestyles. Whether you are an elite athlete or just getting started on the road to being more active we offer something for everyone. Visit our website and see how you could have fun while keeping fit.”

The Elite Athlete grant scheme was inspired by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and well over 100 people have already benefitted.

Grants will be awarded depending on the level at which the applicants are competing, the determination and drive that they have shown to achieve their goals, and their potential to reach world class events, with priority being given to those taking part in Olympic and Paralympic sports.

The funding can be used for things such as equipment purchases, training and travel and the bidding process asks for how it will be used to help achieve sporting goals.

To be eligible you must live in South Cambridgeshire. If an applicant studies or trains outside the district they can apply if their family home is in the area.
