Background

The Former Bayer CropScience site is located along the A10 on the outskirts of Hauxton. Since the 1940s the site was used for the production of agrochemicals including pesticides and herbicides, which over time have contaminated the soil and ground water.

Due to the risk posed to the groundwater and nearby watercourses, the site was determined as Contaminated Land in 2003 by SCDC under Part IIa of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and designated a Special Site for regulation by the Environment Agency. The site therefore had to be remediated.

Outline planning permission was granted for the site in February 2010 for residential and mixed use development of the site, subject to it being remediated to a standard suitable for these uses.

The outline application (S/2308/06/O) along with the documents submitted and the Decision Notice can be viewed here

A specialist remediation contractor Vertase FLI was employed to carry the remediation work. The work was carried out under an Environmental Permit with supporting information issued by the Environment Agency, and under a planning consent specific to the remediation work, granted in February 2010.

The Planning application for remediation works (S/2307/06/F) along with the documents submitted and the Decision Notice can be viewed here

In May-2011 permission was granted for a variation to the Remediation Method Statement to allow for reduced frequency of water level monitoring, from daily to twice weekly except during heavy rainfall events, and substitution of ground level water contour graphs for ground water level contour maps in required progress reports.
