Bar Hill

Work to build the new junction at Bar Hill is progressing well and Highways England are now preparing to move to the next phase of work. This will allow them to continue work on the new junction, local access road and main carriageway of the A14.

A full list of changes is listed below – this includes the closure of the A14 westbound exit slip at Bar Hill (junction 29), which is particularly important to note if you currently use this exit slip road to leave the A14.

If you would like to find out about any A14 road closures, please look at our page detailing the closures. This page gets updated on a weekly basis.

The temporary westbound exit slip at Bar Hill that was opened over the festive period closed on Thursday 9 January night at approximately 9pm. We hope this being open was of benefit to drivers during the recent holiday period

The remaining works to complete the slip road will take place over the next couple of months, including finishing the drainage and kerbing, top layer surfacing and the installation of permanent vehicle crash barriers.

We will also be installing and tensioning the cables on the new bridge over A14.

The slip road is expected to open in its permanent completed state at the end of Feb 2020

What’s happening?

On Thursday 7 November 2019, the second of the new bridges will open, meaning the new roundabout at Bar Hill will be fully operational.

  • The local road between Bar Hill and Oakington will become two-way

  • A14 westbound entry slip at Dry Drayton (junction 30) closes

A mp of the Bar Hill road closures on the A14

How will this affect your journey?

For travel on the westbound A14

  • If you’re travelling to Dry Drayton, Oakington, Bar Hill, Longstanton and Northstowe, you’ll exit the A14 at junction 30 (Dry Drayton).

Those travelling to Bar Hill, Longstanton and Northstowe will cross the A14 on Dry Drayton bridge, turn left at the roundabout and then continue west along the new two-way local road towards junction 29 (Bar Hill), where you’ll turn right towards B1050 Hattons Road to continue to your destination.

  • If you wish to access the westbound A14 from Oakington and Dry Drayton you can either travel west along the new two-way local road to junction 29 (Bar Hill) and join from there, or travel east along the local road past the Crematorium and join the westbound A14 via the Girton entry slip.

For travel on the eastbound A14

  • If you wish to join the eastbound A14 from Oakington and Dry Drayton, travel west along the local road, then turn right towards B1050 Hattons Road to join the eastbound A14 via the new entry slip road from junction 29 (Bar Hill).

  • If you wish to join the eastbound A14 from Bar Hill, Longstanton and Northstowe, you’ll be able to use the new entry slip road from junction 29 (Bar Hill).

Bar Hill Road Layout: Additional changes Tuesday 26 November

Overnight on Monday, ready for Tuesday 26 November morning, Highways England will be making changes at the Bar Hill and Oakington junctions.

They will open the new eastbound exit slip to Bar Hill J29 (green line below) which will take drivers from the A14 onto the new Bar Hill roundabout.

At the same time the current eastbound exit slip to Bar Hill just after Lolworth bridge will close and eastbound traffic exiting will no longer need to come along the long exit slip and turn left up the loop round to Bar Hill  (red crosses below)

The Barhill changes explained with a red cross and a green arrow on the lanes that are changing

The eastbound Bar Hill entry slip off the roundabout will join as the lane gain rather than merging into the existing lane one as it does at the moment.

This means they can then close the Oakington J30 eastbound entry slip.
