A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet improvement scheme

The A428 between St Neots and Caxton Gibbet is the only stretch of single carriageway between the M1 near Milton Keynes and Cambridge. It is an important link between the M1 and the M11, connecting the communities of Bedford, St Neots, Cambridge and Cambourne. Around 22,000 vehicles travel between Cambridge Road and Caxton Gibbet every day. With considerable local housing and job growth expected, this number is likely to grow to 27,000 vehicles by 2038.

People that use the A428 regularly experience congestion and delays, especially in rush hour. The situation is made worse by the lack of alternative routes.

In summer 2019, Highways England consulted on proposals for the new dual carriageway and junction improvements. They listened to your feedback and as a result have improved the scheme design, making changes to their original proposals. Many of these will help minimise impacts on the environment and local communities. Highways England consulted on these changes in June and July 2020.

What are the benefits of doing this work?

  1. Improve safety at junctions, side roads and private accesses by reducing traffic flows on the existing A428
  2. Enable growth in jobs and housing and improve connections between people and jobs
  3. Cut journey times by more than a third at peak times between Black Cat and Caxton Gibbet junctions
  4. Improving the safety of horse riders, cyclist, walkers and connecting communities
