Cambridge Northern Fringe Area Action Plan (AAP)

What is the Cambridge Northern Fringe Area Action Plan?

We and Cambridge City Council are considering the future of the Cambridge Northern Fringe (CNF) area, which is one of the most important brownfield regeneration opportunities in the Greater Cambridge area.

The Cambridge North railway station opened on 21 May 2017 and provides a catalyst for an exciting opportunity to create a high quality employment led mixed use development.

The Cambridge Local Plan (October 2018) and South Cambridgeshire Local Plan (September 2018) both propose the preparation of an Area Action Plan for the CNF area.

Preparation of the Cambridge Northern Fringe AAP

Preparation of a joint Area Action Plan (AAP) has started and it will be prepared in three main stages:

1. Issues & Options Report: this document set out the main issues for the area and the potential options to address them and was subject to public consultation from 8 December 2014 to 2 February 2015.

The Councils have produced a summary report of the comments submitted and full comments can be viewed using the online consultation system.

The comments submitted to the Issues & Options consultation, revised options for the potential range of development in the CNFE area, and a revised timetable for the preparation of the AAP was considered at the following meetings:

2. Issues and Options Report (2): this document will review and respond to the main points raised during the consultation on the first Issues and Options report, reflect the adoption of the Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire Local Plans and respond to additional evidence that is now available. Consultation on this document is due to take place in Spring 2019.

3. Draft Area Action Plan: this Draft AAP will set out the policies proposed to guide development of the CNF area. Consultation on this draft AAP is anticipated in Spring 2020.

4. Submission of AAP: the CNF AAP will be submitted to the Secretary of State for examination. This stage is currently anticipated to take place in Summer 2021.
