Cllr Rosy Moore, Cambridge City Council’s Executive Councillor for Climate Change, Environment and City Centre, said: “Over the Bank Holiday weekend, try to reduce your waste as much as possible and begin the move towards zero waste if you haven’t already. There are many ways to do this, for example choosing to refuse single-use items such as coffee cups, shopping bags and even face coverings and opt for reusables instead. One of the largest contributors is packaging – particularly from food. Search online for your nearest refill shop and take along your own container. If we add up all these small changes, the difference would be huge.”
Cllr Brian Milnes, South Cambridgeshire District Council's Lead Cabinet Member for Environmental Services and Licensing, said: “Thank you to all of our residents for continuing to keep our recycling figures going in the right direction. Research has shown that half of our population say they are recycling more than last year which is great. Let’s keep educating ourselves further about ways to reduce waste and recycle more, and share this with our friends and family too. Food is still the most frequent item that is put in our black bins that can be recycled; only buy what you need and if you can’t turn leftover food into another meal, make sure it goes into the green bin in either a paper liner or wrapped in newspaper.”
Household bin collections across South Cambridgeshire and Cambridge City are carried out by the Greater Cambridge Shared Waste Service, a partnership between South Cambridgeshire District and Cambridge City Councils.
