Street Naming and Numbering Services

South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC) has a number of responsibilities for street naming and numbering, these are set out in the following paragraphs. In some instances we charge for our services. Please consult the Address Management Policy for further guidance and details of the charges. Unless indicated otherwise please use the application form at the bottom of the page to apply for a street naming and numbering service.

New developments

South Cambridgeshire District Council is responsible for:

  • Allocation of new street names (and changes to street names where required)
  • Allocation of new property numbers

Where large developments take place which require the building of new roads, the names of these roads have to be approved by the local authority.

Addresses for individual dwellings

If a house is erected on an in-fill plot between existing properties, the new dwelling will be given a number which follows on from the existing properties. In some cases this will require a suffix of the adjacent number (eg: 8A)

If the existing properties do not have numbers, the owner may submit a house name for approval. This will be checked to ensure it does not conflict with any others in the neighbourhood and that it complies with our Address Management Policy.

Changes to an existing address

If you move house or business and decide that you want to give the property a name, or change the existing name, then South Cambridgeshire District Council must be notified.

Names submitted will be checked to ensure they do not conflict with any others in the neighbourhood and that they comply with the Address Management Policy.

It is very important that this procedure is followed to ensure:

  • The statutory bodies and emergency services are aware of the change.
  • Your address is held on the Royal Mail's database and the National Land and Property Gazetteer.

Therefore if the Council is not informed of a proposed change to an existing address it will not be possible for service providers to locate the property, and address reliant procedures, such as credit card payments could be affected.

If your house has a number allocated to it, you must legally keep this as part of your address, however, house names may be added to the existing address. Please note in these circumstances Royal Mail will use the house number as the official address and will only hold the house name in an 'alias' file within their property database.
