Flooding

Flooding can be a problem in South Cambridgeshire and the district council can help in several areas. Firstly by preventative methods such as the maintenance of the drainage ditches (awarded to the council) in the area but also by the provision of materials to defend against flood waters.

Provision of sand bags for flooding incidents

In the event of high levels of rainfall that result in exceptionally high water levels either from rivers or 'flash flooding' from water run off, South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC) will try, where possible, to assist residents in domestic properties who's houses are either at imminent risk of flooding or have historically been flooded in the past, with the provision of sand bags to protect doors and airbricks.

However, residents are requested to take action to protect their own properties as much as possible. Depending upon the scale of the flooding around the South Cambs district, supplies of sand bags may be limited and slow delivery timescales could be experienced.

  • The service can be accessed from 08:00 hrs to 20:00 hrs (Monday to Friday) and 09:00 hrs to 13:00 hrs (Saturday) by calling the contact centre on 03450 450 063.
  • Outside of these hours, calls should be made to the Environmental Health Duty Officer via their pager service on 01253 501055.

Local businesses are not covered by this service and must therefore make provision under their own Business continuity planning arrangements.
