Women Try Netball

Netball

In 2003 South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC) grew concerned about the under-representation of women in sport across the district. Netball was identified as a sport most women would have taken part in as schoolgirls. It is an activity which champions social and physical benefits and enhances mental wellbeing.

Women try netball is for all women who:

  • want to meet others in a fun and sociable environmentNetbll winners 2010/11
  • enjoy team sports
  • fancy trying something new
  • love being outside in the fresh air

Each year projects run for an initial five weeks with the opportunity of a further five sessions to support the long-term development of the group. A qualified netball coach runs the 1.5hour sessions, coaching, developing skills and teaching the rules through fun activities. Sessions are designed to suit all abilities - no previous netball experience or knowledge required.

How to get involved

If you and your friends are interested in starting a netball group then get in touch with Helen Stepney on the details at the bottom of this page and we can look to support a group in your area.

Womens Netball League

The successful Try sessions led SCDC to identify a need for an "Adult-friendly netball league" to take place. This needed to be on a weekday evening making them as accessible as possible for busy women. (Local competitive leagues run at weekends). When formed in 2008, six teams formed part of the pilot. As we start the league for the fourth year we have 16 teams entered. This proves that more and more women want to take part in netball during the week.

Year One - 2008
- Six teams took part
- They took part in matches once a month on a Thursday evening until March 2009

Year Two - 2009
- The league linked into the England Netball national initiative "Back to Netball" and invited any local projects or groups to also enter the league.
- 12 teams took part
- Seven of which were teams from South Cambs

Year Three - 2010
- Nine teams took part
- Six teams were from South Cambs
- The winning team "Swifts" were from Melbourn in South Cambs

Year Four - 2011
- Following feedback from the 2010 league, teams wanted matches more regularly than once a month and for them to start earlier.
- For the first time, the league will start with a tournament, which will enable us to grade the teams and form divisions for the league.
- Sixteen teams have entered the tournament and league
- Nine teams are from South Cambs

The 2011/12 league started on 20th October with a tournement which involved 16 teams. Congratulations to "The Bulls" from Brampton who won this event. The league started on 3rd November and continues until 22nd March 2012.

Congratulations to all who took part in 2010/11, particularly the winning team Swifts seen below.
