Wildlife at the Park

A mixture of woodland, grass and water areas within the park ensures that there is always a wide variety of wildlife present, from towering willows to dancing butterflies, summer warblers to wintering ducks. You may take away the memory of a muntjac deer browsing among brambles or a kingfisher skimming low over the water. There is always something to make your visit more enjoyable and persuade you to come again.
Please see below for two FAQs regarding wildlife:
I've found a sick or injured animal or bird, can you help?
Unfortunately the rangers are not able to help with animals or birds that you might have found as they are not experts in wildlife. There are specific organisations that might be able to help you or offer advice:
- Squirrels (This link will open in a new window) - Squirrels Info
- Hedgehogs (This link will open in a new window) - British Hedgehog Preservation Society
- Bats (This link will open in a new window) - Bats Conservation Trust. National Bat Helpline Number (0845) 1300 228
- Owls, wild birds or birds of prey - please call the Raptor Foundation on 01487 741140 before bringing any non-raptor to the Raptor Foundation.
- Badgers and Otters - Cambridgeshire Badger and Otter Group, contact Steve Parnwell, email: steveparnwell@hotmail.com
If you find a fledgling (a baby/young bird) the best thing you can do is leave them be, or move them to some undergrowth. They are probably just learning to fly and so have a few false starts and need to let their heads stop spinning! Please do not bring them to the park as the mother may later reject them.
I have an animal or bird that needs somewhere safe to be released; can I bring it to the park and release it there?
No, please do not bring animals or birds to the park to release them, this includes bringing frog or toad spawn. Releasing any previously sick or injured animal is a huge risk to the park. The main reasons we do not want them released here are because of disease and infection that could come into the park and spread to the animals and birds living here. Also it would be unknown territory which would contribute towards reducing their chances of survival.
Please see above for specific wild animal rescue groups for more help.
