London 2012

Councillor Jaime Dipple

Cllr Jaime Dipple, SCDC Champion for the Olympics

As South Cambridgeshire District Council's Champion for the Olympics, I am pleased to introduce the new London 2012 pages. In the run-up to the Olympics I will be representing the Council as we help to launch new initiatives and activities linked to the Olympic legacy and making sport and leisure activities a viable option for anyone wanting to get involved.

As we saw out 2009, we reached a significant milestone in the countdown to London 2012. October marked just 1,000 days to go until the start of the Games and December marked the 1,000 day countdown to the Paralympic Games. I was pleased to celebrate both occasions with Chairman Councillor Nightingale, by presenting all councillors with a unique 2012 lapel badge, which I hope they will wear with pride.

As the Olympics draw ever closer, we have another action-packed year planned. A celebration event called 'Park Life' will mark the two-year countdown. It will be held on Sunday 25 July at Milton Country Park and will be even bigger and better than last year. There will be something for the whole family, with a mixture of free sports activities, demonstrations and music, so be sure to read the June edition of the magazine for details of the full programme.

Remember that the government's free swimming initiative is still available throughout 2010 at Impington, Sawston and Melbourn swimming pools for young people aged 16 and under and adults aged 60 and over. We are very pleased to have the support of Cambridge Dial-A-Ride, Royston & District Community transport and 3CT who can assist in transporting adults over the age of 60 to the pools.
