The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games

James Hockney

Cllr James Hockney - Council Champion for The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games

Welcome to our London 2012 Games (This link will open in a new window)pages. In the run-up to the Olympics we have launched new initiatives and activities linked to the Olympic legacy and are making sport and leisure activities a viable option for anyone wanting to get involved.

As we saw out 2009, we reached a significant milestone in the countdown to London 2012. October marked just 1,000 days to go until the start of the Games and December marked the 1,000 day countdown to the Paralympic Games. All councillors were presented with a unique 2012 lapel badge, which we hope they will wear with pride.

In 2010 More than 2,000 people descended on Milton Country Park for the free two-year count down to the London 2012 Olympics event. The challenge for participants was to "try something new to help get active in the lead up to the 2012 Games". Families enjoyed paddle boarding on Todd's Pitt lake with the Fen paddle company; having a go at tennis, golf, football, fencing, athletics and basketball in the South Cambs School Sports Partnership area; scaling the climbing wall, trampolining, negotiating the inflatable assault course and mountain biking in the challenge zone.

2011 saw us help the 50th of our Elite Athletes recieve funding and we hope to see some future Olympians and Paralympians in the making. We hosted our one year to go event at Milton Country Park, seeing over 3000 visitors. We supported the Mini Olympics hosted by South Cambridge's Schools Sports Partnership, Heped fund the Cambourne Bloco and a range of other community events.

As we enter 2012 and the 200 day's to go (9th January 2012) look out for more activities and events that we plan to support and host.
