Financial Assistance Scheme
The scheme is designed to financially aid council tenants who move from a two bedroom house or larger into an eligible property.
What is an eligible property?
Qualifying tenants moving to the following types of Council property within the district, can receive disturbance allowances in accordance with the adopted scale.
- General Purpose Units: 1 bedroom flats
- 2 bedroom bungalows
- 1 bedroom bungalows
- Bedsitter bungalows / flats
- Sheltered properties: All types
Scale of allowance payable
Disturbance allowance of £500 in all cases.
Please note: This payment represents a contribution towards any new carpets, curtains and other items as a result of the move.
PLUS additional payments to be made:
From a house to a bungalow/flat with the same number of bedrooms e.g. two bedroom house to two bedroom bungalow £250.00
To a property with: 1 less bedroom £250.00
2 less bedrooms £375.00
3 less bedrooms (max) £500.00
Incidental expenses: Disconnection and reconnection of cookers;
Connection or reconnection of telephone;
Connection or reconnection of cable/satellite TV;
Plumbing for automatic washing machine and/or dishwasher
Please note: These are only payable in circumstances where the tenant has the use of such facilities in their current home.
The scheme will not be means-tested and therefore applies to all qualifying tenants moving to eligible properties.
How do I apply for the scheme?
A Housing Register application form must be completed. At the time of allocation of the property an assessment will be made to see if the applicant qualifies for the Financial Assistance Scheme.

Do you pay removal costs?
The initial payment of £500 is to cover moving expenses.
I have got rent arrears; will I still receive the payment?
You will receive £500 and any additional amount over this that you are eligible for will be put forward to clear your rent arrears.
How will I receive the money?
In the form of a cheque.
When will I receive the money?
Once you move, your Housing Services Officer will process your claim and a cheque will be sent as soon as possible.
