DO YOU HAVE A PARKING PROBLEM?
If the answer is 'yes', then we can help. Here are some of the common questions we get asked. If these don't answer your question then please contact your local Housing Services Officer.
As a council tenant, can I park anywhere?
This authority does not allocate spaces to individuals; all parking is on a first-come first-served basis. This Council does not allow parking on grassed areas or communal grassed areas, either within the curtilage of your property or on the verge outside. You must park on hardstanding (a driveway or paved area intended for parking).
Is there a limit to the type of vehicle I can park?
You must not park lorries, coaches, HGV's, commercial vehicles, plants or vans over 25 cwt, caravans or motor homes on the garden, driveway, paved or grassed area around your home or on any communal parking areas without the council's agreement in writing.
What other parking limitations are there?
- You and your visitors must not park anywhere that would obstruct emergency services.
- You must not do car repairs or park illegal, unroadworthy or untaxed vehicles on the land around your home or on the road.
- You must not make a hardstanding or create vehicular access without the council's written permission. In this case you may also be required to obtain Planning Permission.
- You must not abandon any vehicle on council property.
Can I install my own driveway?
Yes, subject to your rent account being clear from arrears. You will need to write to your Housing Services Officer and request your landlord's permission, showing the location and layout of the driveway/hardstanding. The driveway/hardstanding should be installed at the tenant's expense. We will then send you a schedule of conditions and a completion card. Upon receipt of the completion card, the Council will arrange to drop the kerb, at no extra cost to the tenant.
My neighbour is a previous council tenant who has purchased, under the right to buy scheme, and he tells me off for parking outside his house!
A property previously owned by this Authority is not normally sold with a designated parking place. They are given the right to park one vehicle in any available space.
I am registered disabled; can I have a designated parking space near to my house?
In exceptional circumstances, we can allocate a parking space to a registered disabled driver. You would need to apply in writing to your Neighbourhood Manager, making a request.
My car keeps getting vandalised, can I rent a garage?
This Council has garages to rent, to tenants and private occupiers. There is, however, a waiting list for certain areas.
Can I reserve / obstruct a place for parking with cones etc?
No, parking spaces are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. It is not permitted to obstruct any of these for sole purposes.
Can I have double yellow lines put outside my property to stop people parking there?
You need to contact the County Highways Department (This link will open in a new window) to request this.
If I have a parking dispute which is not on council land, who do I contact?
You would need to contact the County Highways Department (This link will open in a new window).
How do I make a complaint regarding a parking issue?
You must write to housing services with your concerns.
Please include: Your name, address, location of the dispute, details of any other party (if known), log of events.
The housing services team will reply within 14 days of receipt of your letter. They will investigate your complaint and inform you of the outcome. If you experience further problems it is important to contact us immediately.
