Tenant Permissions for Alterations - Request for information

A tenant has the right to put in their own improvements, such as central heating, a shower or a gas fire, but they must get the Council's agreement in writing before doing any work like this. The Council will not refuse permission unless there is a good reason. (You may also need planning and building regulation approval).

Examples of alterations that require permission:

  • Installation of a water meter
  • Hardstanding
  • Erecting a fence
  • Erection of a satellite dish / aerial
  • Erection of a shed
  • Internal improvements i.e. knocking down walls, changing electrical fittings, replacing kitchens
  • Fitting an electrical shower
  • Erecting a conservatory

How do I request permission?

You must write to housing services requesting permission for the alternation that you would like to carry out. Important information you must include:

  • Your name
  • Your address
  • Details of the alteration including plans with measurements if appropriate.

What happens next?

After receiving your request the Housing department will send you an application form to complete. Upon receipt of this form we will check your rent account to make sure you do not have any arrears. If you are in arrears, permission will not be granted. You will need to re-apply once the rent account is clear, whereupon the Housing department will reply within 14 days of receipt of your letter to inform you of their decision.

If permission is granted a blue completion card will be enclosed, which you must complete and return to the Housing department on completion of works, in order for arrangements to be made to inspect the alterations.

For more information see your Tenancy Agreement.
