Beacon award - One of the Best

If we had a trumpet now would be the time to blow it.  SCDC has been awarded the prestigious and sought after Beacon status for Waste and Recycling.

This is praise indeed - it means that SCDC is at the cutting edge of policy development on Waste and Recycling.

South Cambs is proudly often ahead of the curve in implementing the latest recycling ideas.  But at the end of day, it's the hard work of residents that means that we have exceeded targets and done so well.

"South Cambridgeshire is the second best district in the UK for composting, and third best for overall recycling."

To be given Beacon status simply means we are one of the best and the aim of the Beacon awards is to encourage us to share our experiences with other authorities to help raise standards throughout the UK.

What did we do to get it?

Over the past five years RECAP (Recycling in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough) (This link will open in a new window), a partnership involving all Cambridgeshire and Peterborough councils, has worked together to help residents reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill by maximising recycling and composting.

Among our achievements are:

• improving village recycling banks
• exceeding recycling targets
• winning an award for excellence in Waste and Recycling
• helping the community get involved
