Notes:

[1] Expanded polystrene - There are two types of polystyrene (PS). Although we can accept rigid polystyrene which most commonly comes in the form of yoghurt pots, we cannot accept expanded polystyrene (e.g. protective packaging for electrical goods, foam meat and fish trays).

[2] Shredded paper - Please contain shredded paper within an old envelope. Remember you only need to shred the part of the document displaying confidential information.

[3] Food waste liners - We can only accept paper liners in the green bin. Compostable/biodegradable liners (e.g. cornstarch/potato starch ) cannot be placed in the green bin. Paper liners are available to purchase online, local outlets or supermarkets. (link to paper liner page)

[4] Large electrical appliances can be taken to Milton or Thriplow Recycling Centre or can be collected through the chargeable Bulky Waste Collection Service.

[5] Turf/soil and rubble cannot be placed in any wheeled bin (black, green or blue) due to its weight.

[6] Please put the battery bag out for collection with your blue bin. Using the self-adhesive strip, attach the bag to the bin underneath the handle. The collection crew will leave a replacement bag for you. If your battery bag is not replaced please contact us for a replacement or us a plastic bag and attach it to the handle of your blue bin. We cannot collect lead acid batteries (e.g. vehicle batteries) - please take these to Milton or Thriplow Recycling Centre.

[7] Paint taken to Milton and Thriplow Household Waste Recycling Centres is processed and then distributed by the Cambridgeshire Community Reuse & Recycling Network (This link will open in a new window) as part of their Community Repaint scheme. For more information please visit their website by clicking on the link above.

Excess recycling

Any excess blue bin recyclable material can be placed alongside your blue bin in a returnable container or a cardboard box, which we will not return but recycle for you. Please ensure that excess paper is in a separate box to other recyclables.

Excess Black Bin waste cannot be collected, please take it to Milton or Thriplow Recycling Centre.

Excess Green Bin waste cannot be collected, please compost it or take to Milton or Thriplow Recycling Centre. Kitchen and garden waste from your green bin is composted and made into soil improver. You can collect soil improver free from AmeyCespa Waste Management Park at Waterbeach, Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm, Saturday 8am to 12noon. Just remember to bring your own sacks and a shovel.

Plastic sacks

Plastic sacks must NOT be used in the green bin. This includes plastic sacks purchased as "biodegradable".

Contaminated bins

If any non compostable waste is placed into the green bin or non-recycable waste is placed in the blue bin it will be classed as "contaminated" and will NOT be collected.

If a bin is found to be contaminated a card will be left on the bin to explain why it was not collected. You are requested to re-sort your rubbish into the correct bin and re-present for collection on the appropriate day.

The Council has a strict contamination policy to ensure that only material capable of being composted or recycled is collected.
