Frequently asked questions
I can not manage to carry the box to the normal collection point?
If you have problems carrying the box to the kerbside special arrangements can be made for you to receive an assisted collection.
Telephone 08450 450 500 to apply.
Can I keep my own box?
If you put your house name or number on the side of the box, we will try to ensure you get your own box back. The street name isn't needed. Otherwise you will receive another box.
Does it matter if it rains and the contents get wet?
No - it's more important you put your box out for collection by 7.00am, whatever the weather.
What time should I put the box out for collection?
The bins are collected between 7.00am - 6:30pm by a contractor called Cleanaway. If your box isn't outside by 7.00am, on the date specified for your area - IT MAY NOT BE EMPTIED.
My box wasn't emptied on the date specified?
If your box was out by 7.00am please call Cleanaway on the help line number 08450 450 500 as soon as possible so that arrangements can be made to empty your box. It should be collected by the end of the next working day.
Why are lids not provided?
It was decided that lids would not be provided for several reasons including:
§ Lids would restrict the volume of the boxes
§ Cost
§ Lids as they would not be attached to the boxes could become windblown in windy conditions.
§ It does not matter if newspapers or magazines get wet.
My box was not returned after collection?
Please call Cleanaway on the help line number 08450 450 500 as soon as possible so that arrangements can be made to deliver another box to you.
What goes in the box?
What can I do to prevent maggots in my wheeled bin?
Every summer we get complaints from residents about smells and maggots in wheeled bins. While these aren't common problems, they can be unpleasant. For a problem-free bin this summer follow these simple steps:
- Put any unwanted cooked or uncooked food waste into your green bin for composting
- Wrap food waste in newspaper
- Keep bin lids firmly closed so that flies and other animals cannot get into them
- Clear spillages to deal with any potential odour or insect problems
- Once empty, leave the bin lid open away from the house to get rid of any lingering smells
- Use old washing up water or warm water with bleach/detergent in it (diluted) to rinse the bin
- Try placing old newspaper or flattened cardboard in the base of the bin to soak up liquor from garden waste or food waste
- Try not to leave meat/fish waste out in the home as it attracts flies, which can then cause maggots.
