Community Relations
South Cambridgeshire District Council's Community Development team help to protect the welfare of Travellers within the district.
- They host South Cambs Travellers Liaison Forum meetings and work in partnership with other agencies to ensure that the day-to-day needs of Travellers are properly met.
- They work with The Ormiston Children and Families Trust, The Primary Care Trust, Cambridgeshire County Council and other organisations working with Travellers to develop new initiatives and projects that help meet the needs of Travellers in South Cambridgeshire.
- They also provide reports and help develop the Council's policies relating to Travellers through work with Travellers groups, Councillors and other agencies.
Travellers have been recognised within The Community Safety Strategy for South Cambs 2005-08 and the following section appears in the final document.
Community Cohesion
Aim: To promote greater community cohesion between the settled and travelling communities.
Objectives:
- To establish the issues and concerns of the Travelling community
- To improve communication between the settled and Travelling communities, and increase mutual understanding.
- To address issues concerning fear of crime and hate crime.
- To increase communication between Partnership and the Travelling community to ensure services are accessible.
- To encourage cultural awareness for agencies.
- To complete a needs assessment with the Travelling community and publicise the findings.
- To consider and publicise plans for meeting the needs of the Travelling community, as identified in the assessment.
- To reduce the number of unauthorised developments across the district.
