Peat-based composts phased out by 2010

Many gardeners don't realise the environmental impacts of using peat-based composts for their gardening needs. A Government campaign is set to promote the use of peat-free composts to reduce CO2 emissions and protect biodiversity and wildlife in lowland raised bogs (where the peat originates).

Digging up areas for peat releases CO2, damages habitats and combined with the statistics that 50% of the UK's peat is imported from overseas - using peat-based composts in very carbon-intensive and damaging for the environment.
