Fumes and Gases

Council's involvement: Section 79(1) of the Environmental Protection Act requires the local authority to take such steps as are reasonably practicable to investigate complaints that relate to fumes or gases from dwellings - this only applies to private dwellings. Fumes mean any airborne solid matter smaller than dust. Gas includes vapour and moisture precipitated from vapour

An obvious problem that this can address is that caused by the flue emitting exhaust gases from a central heating boiler into a neighbour's bedroom window. In this case the first point of contact would be your gas supplier.

An occasion where you would contact Health and Environmental services would be if a neighbour was using chemical sprays for gardening which were encroaching on your property.

Gas safety changes

From 1 April 2009, Gas Safe Register will replace CORGI gas registration as Great Britain's official gas safety body.

From this date, by law, only Gas Safe registered engineers should carry out work on gas appliances or installations in your home.

CORGI gas registrations will not be valid. If someone other than a Gas Safe registered engineer carries out gas work at your home, you could be risking the safety of your family and your property.

Householders are also reminded not to cut corners by installing appliances themselves or skipping safety checks to save money. Incorrectly fitted, badly repaired or poorly maintained gas appliances are a major cause of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. They can also lead to gas leaks and explosions.

The widely recognised CORGI shield will be replaced by the Gas Safe yellow triangle and all Gas Safe registered engineers will carry an ID card with their licence number and a photograph.

The licence number can be easily verified on the Gas Safe website or by phone. To find a Gas Safe registered engineer call 0800 408 5500 or visit www.gassaferegister.co.uk (This link will open in a new window).
