Asbestos disposal advice

Asbestos is most likely found around the home in the following situations:

  • Asbestos cement bonded flat and corrugated sheeting in sheds and garages
  • Tiles, felts and linings on roofs
  • Sewerage, rainwater and flue pipes
  • Cold water tanks
  • Some ceiling or wall tiles
  • Ironing boards
  • Internal walls and wall linings
  • Lagging around central heating systems

It is difficult to identify asbestos materials, you must assume that any asbestos-like material is potentially dangerous and handle it accordingly. Do not drill, saw, scrape, brush or disturb it in any way. If undamaged, leave it alone.

Small amounts of asbestos sheet material around the home, if undamaged, may be disposed of if the following precautions are taken:

  • Demarcate and keep people away from the area if the asbestos material has to be worked on.
  • Work outside, wherever possible, and avoid working with the asbestos material overhead.
  • Keep the material wet during removal and take care not to create dust.
  • Wear protective clothing (disposable) and a disposable dust mask complying with CE marked to RN 149 with FFP2 particulate filters suitable for protection against asbestos.
  • Handle the material as little as possible and keep any sheets intact.
  • Asbestos material should be placed in a strong plastic bag and then placed in a second bag. The bags must be labelled ASBESTOS WASTE.
  • Do not put any asbestos material in your wheeled bin.
  • Asbestos waste is no longer accepted at the Household Waste Recycling Sites at Milton or Thriplow.
  • Small quantities of cement bonded asbestos may be taken by prior appointment to Donarbon Waste Management Park at Waterbeach, but only if contained in special asbestos bags. These are obtainable from the district council offices in Cambourne (see Household Cement Bonded Asbestos below).

Large amounts of material or material in a poor condition must only be removed by a licensed contractor (see Licensed Asbestos Removal below).

Household Cement Bonded Asbestos

Asbestos waste is classed as 'special waste', which means it has to treated differently to, and is not counted as, household waste. Residents of South Cambridgeshire may take small quantities of cement bonded asbestos by prior appointment to Donarbon Waste Management Park at Waterbeach, but only if contained in special asbestos bags obtainable by visiting the district council offices in Cambourne. Residents will need to show proof of residency e.g. utility bill, council tax bill, etc, and specify the quantity of waste, the number of trips required and the type and registration number of vehicle to be used, which will then be passed to Donarbon.

This scheme is provided by Cambridgeshire County Council and is intended for residents carrying out small scale DIY projects. There is therefore a maximum of 9 bags that can be issued per request and a total of 18 bags per domestic address in any 12 month period.

Requests for ten or more bags will be passed to Cambridgeshire County Council who will make enquiries to ensure that the request can be dealt with under their scheme.

Asbestos in Public Places

If you are aware of or suspect that asbestos has been dumped in a public area Environmental Health would certainly wish to know about such an incident. We would visit the site where the material is alleged to have been deposited and endeavour to get the landowner to remove it. The asbestos could be in a field in which case the landowner may be the farmer of if it were on a bridleway or public footpath, we would advise the County Council. In either event, an environmental health officer would visit and then endeavour to have the material removed.
