An application has been received by South Cambridgeshire District Council to alter the frequency of groundwater level monitoring at a remediation site.

A consultation will now take place, ending 16th February 2011. The press release and notice board information for the three remediation notice boards - two in Hauxton and one in Harston - are now available.

In the assessment by South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC) of the remediation application, costs were not a consideration. The application documents were assessed on technical merit and on the basis of whether the methodology proposed would address the significant pollutant linkages that exist on the site. It was considered by SCDC that the remediation methodology put forward, as part of the application, was the only method that would satisfactorily address the contamination at the former Bayer site given the conditions present on site.

As an independent regulator, cost is not a consideration for the Environment Agency. Our role is to ensure that the work is being carried out in a way that does not pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment. Data collected and analysed by the HPA so far shows that this continues to be the case.

All the organisations involved with the site are working to ensure it is cleaned-up safely. Expert toxicologists from the HPA have advised that the levels of compounds identified so far are unlikely to pose a risk to health. Air quality around the site is checked daily (and more frequently if required) and air samples from the site are collected monthly for subsequent analysis. It is important that to safeguard our environment into the future, this work is carried out now.
