18 August 2010

• A meeting was held between all involved agencies and the developers to discuss the progress of the remediation.
• Remediation work commenced in what was believed to be the most contaminated part of the site and good progress in excavating this area and getting the soils into treatment is being made.
• South Cambridgeshire District Council and the Environment Agency are now receiving a daily report from the site, outlining what work is planned for that day.
• Notice boards which have been erected in Hauxton now include frequently asked questions and other bits of information which may be helpful for those without access to the internet.
• Spot checks by SCDC Environmental Health Officers to assess the odour are continuing.

Background

The Former Bayer CropScience site is located along the A10 on the outskirts of Hauxton. Since the 1940s the site was used for the production of agrochemicals including pesticides and herbicides, which over time have contaminated the soil and ground water.

Due to the risk posed to the groundwater and nearby watercourses, the site was determined as Contaminated Land in 2003 by SCDC under Part IIa of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and designated a Special Site for regulation by the Environment Agency. The site must now be remediated and cannot be left in its current form as it poses a potential threat to the Riddy Brook and River Cam.

Outline planning permission was granted for the site in February 2010 for residential and mixed use development of the site, subject to it being remediated to a standard suitable for these uses. (Planning Application Ref: S/2308/06/O (This link will open in a new window))

A specialist remediation contractor Vertase FLI has been employed to carry the remediation work. The work is being carried out under an Environmental Permit with supporting information, issued by the Environment Agency, and under a planning consent specific to the remediation work, granted in February 2010. Remediation of the site started in March 2010 and is expected to take approximately 80 weeks. These works are due for completion in September 2011.

Odours

There have been a number of concerns raised regarding odours from the site. The Environment Agency, South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC) and the Health Protection Agency are working together with Harrow Estates and Vertase FLI to ensure that these works cause minimum disruption to residents of the nearby area.

Should you wish to report a complaint when the odour is evident, please call the Environment Agency 24 hour Incident Hotline on 0800 80 70 60. If you are unable to report it at the time it is occurring you may download an odour diary to record incidents over a period of time that impact on your day-to-day activities.
