North West Cambridge AAP, Submission Draft, May 2008

What is the North West Cambridge AAP?

The Core Strategy Development Plan Document sets out the broad location for future development in South Cambridgeshire. It states that the most preferable location for new development is on the edge of Cambridge. The North West Cambridge AAP is one of three Area Action Plans which will provide detailed planning policy guidance for specific sites on the urban fringe of the City.

The development at North West Cambridge, between Madingley Road and Huntingdon Road, will predominantly be for the long-term needs of Cambridge University. This will include key worker housing for University staff, student housing and new faculty buildings and research facilities and also market housing. In order to do this, the AAP will propose changes to the Cambridge Green Belt. It will also include any necessary proposals for linking the site to Cambridge and the surrounding transport network as well as landscape, recreation and access proposals in Girton Parish.

Latest News on the North West Cambridge AAP

The submission draft North West Cambridge AAP (jointly prepared by South Cambridgeshire District Council and Cambridge City Council), which was submitted to the Secretary of State in May 2008, is currently being scrutinised by independent Inspectors. The oral sessions of the examination were held between November 2008 and January 2009. Further details can be found on Cambridge City Council's North West Cambridge AAP Examination (This link will open in a new window) webpage.

As part of the examination, the Inspectors asked the Councils to undertake additional work in relation to a larger development site option: details of the Inspectors' request (This link will open in a new window). The Councils agreed to the request, and have now considered the planning implications of the revised site and undertaken a sustainability appraisal. The Councils sought your views through a six-week period of public consultation running from 9 March to 20 April 2009. Please see the formal notice for more information.

What happens next?

All responses received will be passed to the independent Inspectors, and will be used by the Inspectors to help inform their final decision on the extent of development at North West Cambridge. An additional hearing on the Inspectors' larger site option will be held on 9 June 2009 at The Guildhall, Cambridge. The Inspectors will then issue their binding report, anticipated to be in July 2009.
