What is the Gypsy and Traveller DPD?

South Cambs Council has recorded more Gypsy and Traveller caravans than any other district in England - over 500 in recent years. In July 2006 the district had the highest number of caravans on authorised private sites in the country - 322. The Gypsy and Traveller DPD will set out policies to address the needs of the Gypsy and Traveller population until 2021. It will also allocate sites up to 2010, the period covered by the "Cambridge Sub-Region Traveller Needs Survey".

The main aims of the Gypsy and Traveller DPD are to:

  • ask for the views of local Gypsies and Travellers;
  • ask for the views of the settled community, parish councils and other partners and stakeholders;
  • develop guidelines for the selection of Gypsy/Traveller sites;
  • identify broad areas and individual locations for potential sites;
  • review currently unauthorised Gypsy and Traveller sites within the district.

Following the consultation carried out on issues and options in November 2006, work is progressing on identifying potential site options. A further round of consultation was programmed for September 2007; however this will now be subject to a delay to enable further work to be undertaken. A revised timetable will be produced in due course, and will be made available to view on the Council's website.
