What is the Core Strategy?

The Core Strategy sets out the overall approach to development in the district. It reflects the strategy in the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Structure Plan 2003 with the focus on locating new development in the most sustainable locations, in this case close to Cambridge and in the proposed new town of Northstowe. These proposals are developed in detailed Area Action Plans. The emphasis of the new development is on housing, to help redress the current imbalance between jobs and houses.

The Core Strategy also categorises the villages of South Cambridgeshire and sets out appropriate levels of development depending on their ability to absorb growth in a sustainable way; and sets out policies relating to the Cambridge Green Belt, the re-use of previously developed land and buildings, and employment and retail provision.

Adoption of the Core Strategy

The Council submitted the Core Strategy to the Secretary of State in January 2006. Examination hearings to test the 'soundness' of the DPD were held in July 2006.

The Inspectors issued in October 2006 their Inspectors Report concluding that the Core Strategy is 'sound' subject to a number of binding changes being made. The Core Strategy was formally adopted on 25 January 2007.

Following the adoption of the Core Strategy, the Council received notification of a legal challenge by Countryside Properties Plc. The legal challenge was withdrawn on 20 October 2008.
