2.2 South Cambs Climate Plan

Low carbon and climate adapted services and leadership across our existing communities and growth areas

As a signatory to the Nottingham Declaration the Council is committed to taking positive actions in terms of both climate change mitigation and adaptation.
With an existing population of just over 130,000 living in 52,000 households across just over 100 parishes South Cambridgeshire has a very diverse and small scale settlement geography which brings its own set of issues for tackling climate change. The district also has the additional component of a high level of new growth in new communities (over 9,000 new homes are planned for construction before 2016). The local area is also home to significant commercial and business development. Combine these two factors with strong rural and commuting car travel patters and you can appreciate why the district has one of the highest CO2 emission per capita figures in the region.

None of the above factors stands alone and thus an integrated strategic response is required - one that develops joined up actions. Drawing the causes of climate change (essentially energy from fossil fuels) out of our lives will be as complex and varied as our day-to-day living itself.

In 2005 the Council published its first Climate Plan. This laid out a range of support actions and objectives designed to pave the way to low carbon and climate adapted living in a low carbon economy across South Cambridgeshire.

The Plan is presently subject to review under the supervision of the council's Climate Change Working Group. A new plan will be framed around the authority's Corporate Service Priorities on climate change with action sub-divided across the following headings:

  • internal operation, estate management and service delivery;
  • the growth areas (Northstowe, Cambourne and the Cambridge fringe sites) and land-use planning;
  • leadership and support within and across South Cambs' existing communities.
