2.1 THE POLITICAL CONTEXT

In this section:

Scope for reaching our targets

Government supported steps toward realising the UK's emissions targets include:

  • ensuring improved levels of resource efficiency are achieved across all sectors;
  • promoting cleaner, more energy efficient technologies;
  • encouraging the more extensive generation of renewable energy, and
  • ensuring new developments are built in accordance with high standards of sustainability.

Key policies to reduce emissions therefore include:

  • Appropriate incentives for the development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies
  • Promotion of changes in lifestyle and commercial behaviour patterns, especially in the building, transport and industrial sectors
  • Effective carbon pricing to create incentives to invest in low-greenhouse gas emitting products, technologies and processes
  • Appropriate sustainable energy infrastructure investment decisions, which will have long term effects on reducing emissions
