Scope for reaching our targets
Government supported steps toward realising the UK's emissions targets include:
- ensuring improved levels of resource efficiency are achieved across all sectors;
- promoting cleaner, more energy efficient technologies;
- encouraging the more extensive generation of renewable energy, and
- ensuring new developments are built in accordance with high standards of sustainability.
Key policies to reduce emissions therefore include:
- Appropriate incentives for the development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies
- Promotion of changes in lifestyle and commercial behaviour patterns, especially in the building, transport and industrial sectors
- Effective carbon pricing to create incentives to invest in low-greenhouse gas emitting products, technologies and processes
- Appropriate sustainable energy infrastructure investment decisions, which will have long term effects on reducing emissions
