LIVING A LOW-CARBON LIFESTYLE
We believe that together we can learn how to live a low-carbon lifestyle
By burning fossil fuels (gas, oil, petrol and coal) to generate energy for our needs (e.g. heat, electricity, transport), we are releasing into the atmosphere huge quantities of carbon dioxide and other gases, which are putting a tremendous stress upon the earth's existing natural systems - the systems that sustain us all.
As well as depleting our resources and polluting the atmosphere, these additional 'man-made' emissions are perilously adding to the 'greenhouse effect' that makes the earth habitable for us - excessively contributing to a global warming which the scientific evidence now tells us, without urgent action, will rapidly and dangerously upset the stability of the earth's global weather systems. This is climate change.
At South Cambridgeshire District Council, we believe (as many others do) that there is much we can all do to limit the more threatening aspects of climate change by living in a more sustainable fashion, in greater harmony with our environment: a low-carbon lifestyle. A lifestyle where we take conscious daily decisions to manage the use of all the resources that make our lives comfortable and prosperous in ways that are more efficient, kinder to the environment, fair for everyone and, above all sustainable - so that we secure a good quality of life not only for us today but for the future generations of South Cambridgeshire residents as well.
These webpages have been developed in partnership with the National Energy Foundation to focus upon the issue of climate change - what the District Council is doing and what we can all do to start making the important and pressing changes towards genuinely low-carbon living.
