Introducing South Cambridgeshire District Council's new Climate Change Action Assessment 2010-2013

Tackling Climate change through our own operations, the services we provide and leadership across the district and beyond.

The downloadable document below provides an assessment of the District Council's position and action options for tackling climate change between 2011 and 2013. This assessment is currently being used to draw up a clear, concise and headline Climate Change Action Plan 2011-2013 for the Council.
The introductory sections of the Assessment are relatively short and can be read individually or together by anyone wanting to understand the Council's commitment, position and response to tackling climate change across South Cambridgeshire. The final 'potential actions' section contains considerably more detail.
The layout is intended to be straightforward and direct. It answers the following five questions:
1. What does 'tackling climate change' really mean?
2. What does this mean for South Cambridgeshire?
3. What is the Council's role?
4. What is the best way to fulfil this role?
5. What are the potential actions we could take?
This new Assessment has come from a lengthy drafting process that has spanned one of the most significant changes in Government in recent times. Following a period of public consultation, a new Plan was ready for adoption from October 2010. However, as the policies of the new Coalition Government were rolled out it was clear that this Plan was going to be out of date before it was published. It was therefore decided to reassess it, run some additional consultation and adopt a new version in 2011. The new Plan will be a very short headline document drawn from the options presented in this Assessment document and backed up by the detail it contains.
This is a positive and forward-looking Assessment that has its feet firmly on the ground. We are not starting from scratch, but building on the previous Climate Plan and several years' active experience. The emphasis is on delivering practical, value-for-money actions that matter and make a real difference for the residents and communities of South Cambridgeshire.
This Climate Change Action Assessment (and subsequently derived Plan) is about making further strides from 'we know' and 'we care' to 'we are doing something'.
