Local heritage - getting involved

Local heritage is part of the rich history and associations of a place and helps makes it special. The Council and its partners support initiatives to identify and preserve local heritage

There are a number of ways that you can get involved in finding out about, celebrating and preserving your heritage. Just some are surveying and recording historic buildings or landscapes, producing a historic map of your village, highlighting heritage in a Parish Plan or on a website, or taking part in a community project to conserve and increase public enjoyment of a local historic site.

National initiatives and help

- English Heritage -Your Heritage (This link will open in a new window)

- The Council for British Archaeology (CBA) (This link will open in a new window)

Other initiatives concentrate on particular parts of the heritage. For example, Faith in Maintenance (This link will open in a new window) (Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings) aims to help volunteers looking after historic places of worship by providing free training on how their building works and how to solve problems caused by leaky gutters and blocked drains.

Local initiatives and help

A local initiative improving the management of archaeological sites in the district, explaining their history and interest, and increasing public access is supported by this Council, the County Council and English Heritage. More information - plus how to find out about local archaeology, sites to visit, and getting involved - is available from the County Councils Historic Environment Team (This link will open in a new window). The Team will also provide information on Geocaching - a hi-tech treasure hunt of Cambridgeshire heritage sites!

The Jigsaw Project (This link will open in a new window) is a community archaeology initiative to enable the people of Cambridgeshire to get involved in archaeology. Jigsaw will support existing local history and archaeology groups by providing free training and equipment to aid them in carrying out research into their local heritage. The initiative also plans to create new local community Archaeology Action Groups to investigate, research and help protect the county's archaeology.

Local history, antiquarian and related societies and groups are a key source of local knowledge and expertise and offer great opportunities to get involved in your heritage.

- The Cambridgeshire Association for Local History (This link will open in a new window) - provides a range of helpful information.

- The Cambridge Antiquarian Society (This link will open in a new window)- includes its Conduit publication listing the county's local history and archaeology organisations, societies, events and lectures.

Getting funding

A number of bodies will give grants for local heritage.

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) (This link will open in a new window) runs programmes that could help. For example, HLF's Your Heritage offers grants between £3,000 and £50,000 for projects that help people to learn about, look after and celebrate heritage in a fun and enjoyable way. HLF's Young Roots (with grants between £3,000 to £25,000) supports projects drawn directly from the interest and ideas of young people, who are supported by youth and heritage organisations to develop skills, build confidence, and connect with their local communities.

The Cambridge Council for Voluntary Service (This link will open in a new window) will give advice on grants to community and voluntary groups in South Cambridgeshire.

South Cambridgeshire District Council can offer grants for some historic buildings repairs.
