Cutting street clutter
This Council supports the removal of unnecessary clutter from our roadsides, which make places less attractive and can distract road users.
You can make a difference by getting involved, pointing out clutter in your area and seeing whether it can be removed or reduced.
National and local campaigns
The Government took a lead in 2010 when it urged councils to cut street clutter and many organisations are now involved.

National campaigns include:
- Civic Voices Street Pride (This link will open in a new window)
- Living Streets cutting back street clutter (This link will open in a new window).
- English Heritages Save Our Streets (This link will open in a new window)
- Cambridge Past, Present & Future (This link will open in a new window) promotes the reduction of clutter in and around Cambridge.
Responsibility for public roads
Our roads need signs that are essential for public safety, or provide helpful information, but over time signs, railings, lighting and other features can mount up and detract from the street scene. Most of the public roads in the county are the responsibility of the County Council (This link will open in a new window). The exceptions are the M11, A11, A14, A10 and A428 which are the responsibility of the Highways Agency (This link will open in a new window).
South Cambridgeshire District Council
This Council aims to prevent or reduce street clutter through its services and day-to-day work whenever possible. The Council encourages new developments and roads that are designed to minimise clutter.
Some of the Council's services control changes that can lead to street clutter. For example, some adverts and signs require planning permission. Further information is available from our Planning Service and from the Governments' Planning Portal (This link will open in a new window).
The Council's enforcement teams actively remove illegal posters, advertisements and A-frames.
Parish Councils and local action
Parish Councils can have an impact on street clutter through their services and responsibilities (This link will open in a new window) and through lobbying for improvements to the local area. While Parish Councils have many responsibilities in common there can also be important differences.
