Archaeology

We cover archaeology, historic landscapes, historic parks and gardens, and scheduled ancient monuments.

Our main services

Planning

The Council's planning decisions and policies take account of the impact on archaeology, historic landscapes, historic parks and gardens, and scheduled ancient monuments. (We get specialist advice and other input from Cambridgeshire County Council's Historic Environment Team and English Heritage.)

Visit Development Control for information on planning proposals and applications, and Local Development Framework for information on local planning documents.

Archaeology sites

We work with Cambridgeshire County Council, English Heritage, communities and landowners to improve the management of archaeological sites in the district, explain their history and interest, and increase public access. Many of the sites are also rich in wildlife.

Visit Cambridgeshire County Councils website for more information about the Cambridgeshire Monument Management Programme (This link will open in a new window) or to find out about sites to visit in South Cambridgeshire (This link will open in a new window).

The Council for British Archaeology aims to involve the public in archaeology and provides information and opportunities for those wishing to take part. It organises the Festival of British Archaeology in the summer, runs the Young Archaeologists Club and publishes the popular magazine British Archaeology.

Cambridge Past Present & Future was founded in 1928 to protect the character, buildings and setting of Cambridge and its surrounding area, and lobbies through the planning system and by raising public awareness. It also maintains several sites in the district including Bourn Post Mill, Hinxton Watermill and Wandlebury Ring Hillfort.

Friends of the Roman Road and Fleam Dyke Worsted Street Roman Road and the Fleam Dyke Anglo-Saxon earthwork are significant historical and archaeological landmarks. Both are nationally protected as Scheduled Monuments, but also provide opportunities for outdoor activities and wildlife.
