WHAT BUILDING CONTROL DO
We promote the health, safety and welfare of the people of South Cambridgeshire by:
- checking all applications for new buildings, or alterations to existing buildings, to ensure they follow legal building regulations and are structurally sound, that they are weather resistant and have adequate sound insulation;
- visiting building sites to check on work in progress;
- checking drainage systems;
- ensuring there are adequate fire exits and other precautions;
- investigating any dangerous buildings or other structures and ensuring that they are made safe.
BUILDING REGULATION
The 'Building Regulation' activity is defined as the administrative and technical processes involved in the enforcement of statutory building standards contained within the Building Regulations and allied legislation.
- Before you construct, extend or convert a building, you should seek advice from your local authority.
- See guidance notes and application forms for information about making a building regulation application.
- Important customer information - changes to Building Regulations regarding thermal element.
There are cases where building projects also require consideration by the Council's Development Control Service or Conservation & design service and you should therefore contact them for additional information.
GOOD NEIGHBOURS
- If you do any building work please consider other people
- Be reasonable with your neighbours
- If you wish to make a complaint, please contact Building Control, giving as much detail as possible, including what action, if any, you have taken yourself to resolve the problem.
DANGEROUS BUILDINGS
- If you see any dangerous buildings or other structures, please let us know immediately.
- If calling out of hours (evenings and Bank Holidays) use 0800 085 1313.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT?
- We normally respond to building regulations applications within 28 days, but always within 35 days, unless a longer timescale is mutually agreed.
- We will carry out site inspections within 24 hours of being asked to (except at weekends and bank holidays).
- We will issue certificates to say that completed building work follows building regulations.
