Summary Budget Book 2008/09

This is the first Budget Book produced by the Council and its aim is to provide financial information for the general public that is informative, well presented and easy to understand.

Introduction

For this year, South Cambridgeshire has set a Band D** council tax of £107.27 - about £2.06 a week - and an increase of 4.9% over the previous year. Even with this increase, the Council has had to curtail some of its aspirations for residents and to factor in a range of efficiency savings. One of the main reasons for this above inflation increase in council tax is the below inflation increase in grant from the Government which is the main source of income to the Council.

So what do you get for £2.06 per week? The most visible services are refuse collection, kerbside recycling and street cleaning. Then, there are services to protect residents and preserve the environment such as community safety, food safety, control of pollution, planning regulations and building control. And also, services for the less fortunate such as homelessness and the administration of disabled facilities grants and of housing and council tax benefit.

And, of course, the figure on the bottom of your council tax bill is lot more than £107.27. The £107.27 is the council tax set by South Cambridgeshire District Council whereas your bill also includes the council tax demands from Cambridgeshire County Council, the Police Authority, the Fire and Rescue Service and your local Parish Council.

Another major service that the Council provides is council housing but these costs are kept in a separate account and are met by rents from tenants.

Further information on the Council's budget and finances can be found in the Summary Budget Book 2008-09.
