Introduction

Your Council Tax helps to pay for the wide range of vital services provided by Cambridgeshire County Council, South Cambridgeshire District Council, the Police Authority and the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Fire Authority.

You may not be aware of the full range of services these authorities provide, or how they affect your every day life.

To most people, the face of local government is the face they see at a local level - the librarian, the home help, the refuse collector, fire fighter, police officer, or teacher, to name but a few.

The Councils provide and support the schools, care for the elderly and most vulnerable in society, provide the roads and libraries, collect and dispose of your rubbish, care for the environment, provide leisure facilities and enable affordable housing. The Police and Fire Services are also partly funded from Council Tax.

Increasingly, councils in Cambridgeshire are working together and with others to ensure they deliver quality cost-effective services to you. The downloadable leaflet, which explains where our money comes from and how your Council Tax helps pay for these services, is another example of councils working together. In previous years you will have received three leaflets, one from each of us. We want to make it easier for you to understand where your money goes and how local councils are working together to make South Cambridgeshire a better and safer place to live and work. We hope this leaflet helps to do that.
